Competitive Analysis: CSCA and Modern Business
Reading time: 4 minutes
In recent years, Competitive Analysis has become a major consideration in how businesses do business – or, more specifically, how businesses look at themselves and how they prepare for growth and change.
What that means for you as a business professional is that people who understand competitive analysis and can prove their competency stand to be a sought-after resource in the job market. And – thanks to very recent changes in the credentialing world – procuring that CSCA certification is now available to a wider range of candidates.
Why Strategic Thinking and Competitive Analysis Are Critical
Businesses have always taken a critical look at how they do things, but the past decade has seen companies look for more critical introspection to develop better future planning. Competition among similar businesses has increased, and the advent of AI and digital delivery means faster (and sometimes better) delivery of a product. A company that was the leading – or only – result on search engine queries is now one of many and oftentimes several places deeper down in the results.
Understanding the “why” of that reality is crucial for both business stability and business growth. As global finance grows in complexity, the demand for professionals who not only understand the numbers but can also guide strategic decisions has intensified. Their value to an organization as Chief Financial Officer, Controller, or other corner-office positions has steadily increased – and professionals with these skills are rising quickly in the ranks of leadership.
CSCA Certification: A Game-Changer for Professionals
This is where the CSCA (Certified in Strategy and Competitive Analysis) Certification makes an individual stand out. This certification shows that you understand the “big picture” view of business. CSCA is ideal for both individuals just beginning their career as staff accountants or are seasoned executives steering their organizations. Professionals aiming to enhance their strategic thinking and analytical skills to secure future leadership positions within their field should strongly consider adding the CSCA credential to their resume.
And now, more than just accountants can earn this credential.
Prior to November 2024, only people holding an existing professional accounting credential - such as CMA (US or India), CFA, CIA, or other international credentials like ACCA (full list available here) - were eligible for CSCA. However, recent changes now allow anyone with a Bachelor’s Degree in any field to earn the certification.
Expanding Access and Growing Opportunities
This change means both benefits and challenges going forward.
On one hand, the universe of professionals earning this certification can now expand beyond solely accounting and finance – much the way Six Sigma certification has gone beyond only people involved in manufacturing. This is a good thing for organizations and companies, as a wider array of professionals will be able to work with both their own responsibilities and the company’s responsibilities and mission in mind.
Conversely, companies can now rely on other individuals beyond accounting and finance professionals for this advice, meaning an area of specialization that used to be solely in our domain no longer is. Competition, as they say, just got more intense.
A High-Value Credential for Your Career
That being said, the value of the CSCA credential is increased because it is available to more professionals. As a previous “secondary” credential (meaning you could only earn it after earning a previous credential), its professional relevance and usefulness was high, but awareness of its importance and value was comparatively low. Now, CSCA stands to become a major professional achievement, one that HR departments and employers will more fully understand and more widely recognize and appreciate.
Whether earning this certification on its own or developing it in combination with another high-profile credential such as Certified Management Accountant or Certified Internal Auditor, possessing your CSCA Credential will become a high-visibility addition to your resume, and a door-opener to professional career opportunities. It simply comes down to what you envision for yourself. As you think through that vision, the right choice for you will become clear. If that choice includes earning your CSCA credential, HOCK international would love to help you achieve that goal.
