How long (and how many hours) do I need to study for the CMA exams?

Both HOCK and the ICMA recommend about 150 hours of study per Part. We suggest that you target to study 8-10 hours per week to prepare for the exam in four months. Depending on your personal and professional obligations, you can adjust this amount of time to fit your schedule.

On average, based on our twenty years of experience, students usually study for each Part of the CMA exam for 5 - 8 months, and pass both Parts of the exam in about a year. However, many students take longer due to competing life priorities. The IMA provides a three year period of eligibility when you first register for the exams.

How does HOCK help me plan my study time?

HOCK students have access to an interactive learning system called PassMap and a Personal Study Plan that:

  • Guides you through the whole exam syllabus with a topic-by-topic study plan.
  • Links the textbook, videos, and practice questions for each topic so that you know what to study together.
  • Provides an estimated study time for each topic so that you can plan your studies.
  • Shows you how many hours you need to study each week to meet your target exam date and automatically adapts if you change your exam date.
