How is My CIA Exam Scored Determined?

First, What is the CIA Exam Structure?

There are three Parts to the CIA exam. Each Part has the following Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and duration:

Part 1

Essentials of
Internal Auditing

0 MCQs

2½ Hours

Part 2

Practice of
Internal Auditing

0 MCQs

2 Hours

Part 3

Business Knowledge
for Internal Auditing

0 MCQs

2 Hours

Every individual exam is drawn from a large database of questions, so each exam is different and will vary in difficulty.

There are no essays or simulations on the CIA Exams.

  • All MCQs are weighted equally

A simple question about a definition counts as much as a long question with a lot of calculations.

  • There is no penalty for incorrect answers

Never leave a question unanswered, even if you have to guess. A 25% chance is better than a 0% chance.

  • Mark questions to review later

You can come back and look at marked questions later after you have gone through all of the questions.

Then, How is My Result Determined?

out of 750

The CIA Exam provides a scaled score that is between 250 and 750 points. You need a 600 to pass.

Note: 600 does NOT translate to 70%. It is simply a score and not a percentage of anything.

Your preliminary exam results are provided immediately when you finish your exam. Official results will be emailed within 24 to 48 hours.

So, What Percentage of the Questions Do I Need to Get Correct to Pass?

You need to get at least 75% of the questions overall in order to be guaranteed to pass.

You may pass with a score as low as 70% if your exam was considered to be more difficult than the average exam.
