How do I register for the CMA exams and how much do they cost?
This page provides an overview of the fees and registration process for taking the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exams. If you have any questions about the fees or registration, please contact us and we will be glad to help.
Step 1: Make sure that you meet the CMA exam requirements
In addition to passing the CMA exams, you have to meet the education and experience requirements. Read the details on our CMA Exam Requirements page.
Step 2: Choose the CMA materials that are best for you and start studying
Step 3: Become an IMA Member
Note: It is not necessary to join the IMA until you are ready to register for the exams.
Professional Membership - $245 annually
Academic Membership - $135 annually
Student Membership - $39 annually
Click to open the Join IMA page on the IMA web site.
Step 4: Pay the CMA Entrance Fee and Exam Registration Fee
We recommend that you wait to pay the CMA Entrance Fee and register for the exam until 6-8 weeks before you are ready to sit for your first exam part, for two reasons:
- You have 3 years from the time you pay your entrance fee to pass both parts. So, by waiting to pay your entrance fee, you can give yourself more time to complete your exams.
- If you wait too late you may not be able to schedule your desired day and time, especially if you are taking the exam towards the end of a testing window.
CMA Entrance Fee (Good for 3 Years)
Professional - $250
Academic - $188
Student - $188
Exam Registration Fee (per Part)
Professional - $415
Academic - $311
Student - $311
Step 5: Receive your authorization number
After you register for the exam, you will receive an authorization number. The authorization number is needed to schedule your appointment with Prometric.
Step 6: Schedule your exam
Using your authorization number, schedule your exam date and time with Prometric.
Note: There is a $50 fee if you want to change your exam appointment. You cannot change your exam to a different exam window.
Step 7: Review the Instructions to Candidates
Review the Instructions to Candidates for what to expect on exam day as well as what you should and should not bring with you to the exam.
What if I need more information about the CMA exam, requirements, procedures, etc.?
For complete information about the CMA exams, including requirements, registration procedures, exam fees, candidate resources and content outlines, download the ICMA’s CMA Handbook (PDF). Some of the information on this page is taken from the CMA Handbook.
Maintaining your CMA certification
Once you have your CMA certification, you must maintain your IMA membership and earn the required CPE every year. Failure to maintain your membership and CPE will result in your removal from the IMA's records of certified members.
